“This… ’stuff’? Oh… ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.”

maybe i am too judgemental..or maybe i am often right about what it is that i think i am seeing. when my eyes fall on someone…i quickly scan their shell.
if it is 9:00 at night and i see a tired looking man wearing an unbuttoned dark pinstripe suit, a not so crisp white shirt with a cutaway collar and french cuffs (and a rolex peeking through), a loosely hanging tie, well polished loafers, and a pda in their hand….i just might assume that this guy is an investment banker. i might be right. i might be wrong. he could be the director of a non profit that simply had a huge presentation that day.
i believe in the power of thin slicing…taking in what you see and quickly coming to conclusions… i just want to hone my skills to come to more accurate conclusions…more often.
this is an exploratory blog that encourages you to say what you see. on a daily basis i will post pictures of everyday people, and i welcome you to tell me whatever comes to your mind when you see this person. what music do they listen to? are they a parent? where do they work? do they have a job? where do they go after-hours? let me know, what you think you know. the following day, i will post my amazingly articulate and psychology based deductive reasoning (ha) behind my assumption…and then i will let you guys know the concrete answers that i gathered from quickly interviewing the subject.
so let us begin…lets talk about folks.

Great post and a great idea! Who are we to judge? I don’t know but I can’t help making up life stories for people I see on the train everyday.
I love this idea. And I love that quote by Meryl Streep’s character in “Devil.” Robin Givhan, fashion writer at the Washington Post often says that her job at the paper is to get everyday people to understand that we ALL participate in fashion. Whether it’s a t-shirt from Target or a ball gown from Carolina Herrera–it’s all fashion. And each time we get dressed in the morning, we recommit ourselves to the participation. Now, let’s try to get Average Joe Middle America Man to believe that!!!
Pam, I think this is great because like Allan (who I believe I graduated with…Suitland 01?), I cannot help but come up with someone’s life story - or at least what I think is their life story - when I see them…
